This is to anyone who says/thinks/or is thinking about saying this.
"is it because I'm black"
If i hear that one more time, I am going to loose it.
Yes, it is becuase your black/mexican/asian/rainbow. Your are motherfucking idiot. You are all morons who look for Affirmative Action because you were too dumb to make somthing of yourself in school so you blame EVERBODY else in society because your a dumb fucking idiot. Have some self-respect.
There should be a IQ standard for everyone in the world, anyone who falls below it should be disposed of. Its called Darwinism. Get rid of the dumb people.
This also includes Unions, anyone who joins a union cant promote themselves through life and need other people to do what they cannot do themselves.
this reminds me of michael vick. everyone on the forums on espn and such are saying shit like "it's because he's black and if he was white, he would have got off. that's bullshit. he's a grown man who knew what he was doing was illegal and he knows the difference between right and wrong. he got what he deserved, regardless of the color of his skin. when people say stuff like that, it belittles REAL cases of racisim. racisim is still out there, but not like in the 60's. let's move on people.
i think affirmitive action is racist in itself that's why i dont support it. it basically says blacks (and lets face it, that's the only race it helps, fuck all other colors) are inferior to everyone else and need special help to get ahead. bs. not all poor people are black. yet they're the only ones who "need" help moveing up. everyone else does it by staying focused, out of trouble and through hard work. blacks are just as capable as everyone else in doing that. that's why affirmitive action needs to go. oh yea, what about these "all black" colleges or buisnesses or clubs. shouldn't affirmitve action go against that and try to integrate those with other races. "all black" is just as racist as "all white". and if it's about pride in being black, why cant others be proud of their roots without being labeled racist. affirmitve action definately needs to go.
as far as unions go, i couldn't disagree more. maybe because i belong to one. it's not about promoteing yourself. it's about getting a fair shake from the suits who generally don't care about the average man and getting your fair share of the pie. if you help build something, you deserve what you earned. some ceo's would rather not pay you. just ask walmart employees, who are forced to work overtime but the company doesn't pay them for it. they work for free. that's basically forced slavery. that's the type of thing unions stop from happening. now not everything about unions is positive i admit, but generally speaking, those who are in a union enjoy a way better life than those who aren't in one in the same profession. america wouldn't be where it is without unions. unions basically single handly built the middle class and gave america it's economical strength with it's strong industrial and manufacureing work.
me myself, i just got a promotion that i wouldnt have got if i was in a non union job. and if things keep going the way they are, within 3 years i'll be at around 100,000 grand a year. plus i have full medical and dental benefits which i don't have to pay anything for. not bad for an ex-con whom no one believed in back in the day.
i just got a promotion that i wouldnt have got if i was in a non union job.
So you needed the Union to help you get somthing you couldnt do yourself.
As the son of a regional manager for a company that frequently hires Convicts on work-release, you need to make promotions so your business thrives. If your a good employee you will be rewarded for fear that you might leave, even the convicts get promotions and pay raises.
Unions help people who are unable to do this for themselves, its like comunism in a way. "Lets all be equal and get pay raises because I suck!"
alot of places have unions and its 50/50 with me.
I had to join the union because its "job security" but with some companies, the head honchoes love to give themselves a raise while others work the frontline.
They do stand up for your rights and try to get you paid properly. On the down side, seniority sucks because people get comfortable and they know the union will support them because they've "done their part".
Sucks.. but its a way of life. Unions in hospital settings are great. Nurses and supporting staff deal with alot of stress and pressure... and in some places, they dont get rewarded for that.
My union wanted to strike outside for a hour, just to let University of California, we want a raise and to meet market expectations. I was gonna go, but I was too damn tired. I monitor 45 patients heart rates... and that takes alot out of you when you sit for 12 hrs.
So you needed the Union to help you get somthing you couldnt do yourself.
no, i definately earned it myself. the union just made sure i got what i was owed. i work for a major worldwide corporation and they have been know to try to skimp on they're employees. the union keeps them in check. but even you have to admit there are alot of bosses and ceo's who refuse to help their employees just so they can have a bigger bonus or give themselves a bigger pay raise. shit, look at congress. they give themselves raises EVERY FREAKING YEAR!!!. but it's taken them decaades to give a measly raise to the minimum wage. people on the top just don't give a rats ass about the average chap. unions help to even the playing field. you probaly ain't in the work force yet, or have just started out. eventually you'll see what i mean. unions also help when bosses or companys try to take advantage of you, by makeing you work more hours than is humanly possable or make you do a job you ain't trained to do and might kill yourself, all just to save a buck. unions ain't perfect, but we need them. the american economy would go under without them. they give finacial power, security and good health to the everyday american who WORKS and they in turn put that extra pay and incentives back into the economy. think about it. people wouldn't be buying much it we all made 5 bucks an hour ( and believe me, most companys would love to pay employees only 5 bucks an hour while they get million dollar bonuses on top of their million dollar salaries. that's why outsourceing is so popular.) and that means not much profit would be made by by companies and then people would be loseing jobs left and right cause companies wouldn't be able to pay employees. it'd be the great depression all over again. ( which by the way it was the unions that partially helped get us out of that.)
but hey, if you want a job with no job security and no one to turn to when your boss starts takeing advantage of you and no way to get ahead in your job while your buddies ride their union jobs to the top, that's your buisness and i wish you luck with that. it's a dog eat dog world out there and people WILL take advantage of you if there's no one to keep them in check.
You make valid points however you only adress idiots who make minimum wage their whole lives. When someone leaves a company, or a new position opens up, people get promoted to fill those spots. Simple as that. Unions are for the weak. In adition,
I will grant you that in your case the union helped you tremendously, therfore i conclude that unions can only be situationaly judged.
And yes I am in the work force. Have been for a long time

people get promoted to fill those spots.
unions just help to make sure every who's qualified gets an equal shot at those spots, not just the bosses son-in-law.
and i think only the weak would not use the strongest and fastest route to the top of their profession. and if that route invloves a union, go for it. never stop striving for more. to purposely avoid being in a union is just giving yourself a handicap, in my opinion. so if the opportunity ever arises to be in a union or whatever, don't just toss it aside, look at it from another viewpoint, you never know what lies ahead. well, that's my one piece of advice for the year. peace.
If you think Union is for the weak, then you really dont understand them. I can understand Affirmative Action, Thats a different story. Unions have their pros and cons, just like working with out the union. In some places or situations, its good to have a union.
Sometimes, its not.
I worked for a company in Kent, was good to its employees until the Owner passed away. The Sons and son in law sold out to a Fortune 500 company and we watched the company fall apart. People getting Position getting filled with people that didnt know the process of the products were were making. Needless to say, the moral of the company went down and it lost alot of money. Eventually, the knowledgable people that were doing this process (vinyl Extrusion) were asked to do more than they were paid to do, get thrown on shifts they didnt like, but still did it.
Why did they deal with the bullshit? Because they couldnt afford to lose their job.
Not to mention, the profit sharing we had every quarter disappeared, and the new owners would rent Range Rovers for months on end, but not use them (the headquarters were in Texas).
Union came in and straighten things out.
---------------------------------------
But thats not to say the union is needy at times? I've heard unions cry over .50 raises and want to strike.
But Union is for the people that get treated like shit. not weak. If that were the case, people would disband unions. Look at all the jobs the require unions. Packing and shipping industry (dhl, UPS, Fedex), Big companies (Boeing,Kenworth), The Healthcare industry(hospitals, Nursing homes) and even the Labor/building industry (carpentry, electrician, construction, plumbing, etc...) But even the food industry (sysco foods, Food service of america, dairy gold)...
If unions are weak, why are these companies and its employees part of them...? Fred Meyers, Albertsons, Safeway all unions.
On contrast, Microsoft hires temps to perm, but at times to avoid paying insurance or healthcare, they use temps to the end of their contracts and lets them go.
When O-dogg and myself were 18, we worked at a temp agency on top of our regular jobs, in hopes of getting a better job with more money. The Temp agency said its temp to hire at a bottling company. We worked there for a few months and then they said they didnt need us anymore. Couple months later, we were called there again and the later told temps were no longer needed. Not only that, working for the temp agency, we were losing 3 dollars an hour instead of getting paid regular. If there was a union in place, we would have been given a chance to work there permanent (and honestly we did our work).
---------------------------------------------------------------
And yes, I've seen favoritism help in non union workplaces. Some people do kiss ass to get above the rest and use that "buddy status" to their advantage.
----------------------------
This is what I've seen in my own eyes.
-------------------------------------
and to add even more, if you ever want to become an electrician or do plumbing or Fac. Maint, Unions offer On the Job Training and provides job placement so you can earn while you learn. For there, you start to build experience and seniority. And if join those unions, they try hard to keep you employeed especially after one contract expires, the find a new one.
